The Upper Mustang Trek leads adventurers to the hidden Buddhist world of the Kingdom of Mustang, also known as Lo. This remote, trans-Himalayan region, bordering Tibet, is characterized by its unique Tibetan culture and arid landscape of dramatic cliffs and vividly colored rock formations. The journey starts at Kagbeni, the entry point to Upper Mustang, and traverses the rain shadow of the Dhaulagiri massif to reach Lo-Manthang, the historical seat of the Kingdom of Lo. Along the way, trekkers explore ancient caves, rock paintings, monasteries, and gompas, gaining insight into the local culture. The route offers panoramic views of peaks like Nilgiri, Annapurna, and Dhaulagiri, enhancing the trek's appeal. In Lo Manthang, visitors can explore Namgyal Gompa, Tingkhar village, and the King’s palace, further enriching their cultural experience. Additionally, the amchi museum and school provide knowledge about traditional Tibetan medicine. A short walk from Lo Manthang leads to Gyakar and the renowned Ghar Gompa, a 1,200-year-old monastery dedicated to Guru Rinpoche, famous for its rock paintings and the belief that wishes made here come true. The trek, at elevations ranging from 3,000m to 3,800m, requires a leisurely pace to acclimatize to the dry, high-altitude environment, with daily hikes lasting 5 to 7 hours on occasionally windy and dusty paths. This trek, partly following the ancient salt trade route, offers a memorable journey through a restricted area, leaving an indelible impression on all who undertake it.
